With this project I wanted to create a cover that would capture the attention of people who enjoy classic literature. I took a lot of inspiration from the covers of other Classics and combined that with symbols and colors inspired by the play itself. The colors palette is dark to reflect some of the darker themes in the story and is heavily inspired by a ship sailing at night and the glow of the lanterns.
My role for this project was designer. I was expected to reimagine a cover design for the play Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie. The cover is heavily inspired by the covers of other classic literature and has components that reflect the story, themes, and emotions conveyed in the play. I also was in charge of creating a simple and cohesive color palette that reflected some of the darker themese of the book as well.
Some of the biggest challenges with this project were with the color palette and making sure it wasn’t too overwhelming. With this project, the color palette is primarily made up of different shades of blue, so I had to find a balance with the different shades and make sure that two similar shades were not next to each other. The other challenge with this project was finding a balance between simple and detailed. My solution for this was to rely heavily on silhouettes and color blocking. This helped to make the cover look interesting without being overwhelmed with intricate linework and details.
The purpose of this project was to create a new cover for the play Peter Pan and Wendy by J.M. Barrie that was reminiscent of other classic book covers, while also drawing inspiration from key symbols and imagery rom the play itself. The color palette uses a lot of darker blues with a little golden yellow, which is inspired by nighttime at sea, the gold comes from the glow of lanterns.
